Tutorial Tuesday - ATC Coins by Donna Gray

Hi everyone,

It's Donna here today and I thought I'd share with you a tutorial featuring the latest craze in the crafting world....ATC coins :)

What I did:

These ATC coins are made from lovely MDF so they can take absolutely everything you sling at them! They are 2.5 inches in size and you can fit a surprising amount on them.

Next stage was to paint them using some yummy Multi Surface paints from That's Crafty! These cover the MDF perfectly so no real need for a coat of Gesso first.

I added some stencilling with white paint using some AALL and Create stencils, to add interest to the background.

I decided I wanted a nature theme for my ATC coins so I chose this wonderful stamp set called Beautiful Bugs which I stamped onto Strathmore Mixed Media paper pad and coloured the images in with a selection of Zig Clean Colour pens, ready to fussy cut out later.

I used the magnifying glass from the Stitch and Frame stamp set which is full of really useful images.  These were fussy cut out so the middle of the magnifying glass was 'empty'.

I attached the magnifying glasses to the ATC coins and added a little piece of Wasi tape here and there to add interest. I also added some Tim Holtz sentiments too that I thought matched with the
theme. Any type of Washi tape will do for this.....and yes I admit now I'm rather obsessed by them!!

I then added some doodling using a Posca pen and added the little flower from the Whimsical Summer stamp set which is a perfect size for this.

I then added some Liquid Glass to the centre of the magnifying glasses and put aside to dry overnight. Do not attempt to heat this stuff as it will go like chewing gum otherwise!!

All that was left to do was add a little bit of white doodling with a Posca pen and adhere the bugs to the coins using foam pads for extra dimension.

I edged the coins with a black Gelato to add more definition.

The flowers were also added with foam pads.

I liked the idea of placing the bugs ON the magnifying glasses rather than UNDER as I thought that appeared to make the bugs more in control ;)

Stamps Used:

Beautiful Bugs

Whimsical Summer

Stich and Frame

Hope you like my Bug Fest today :)

These are gorgeous Donna - and it's not often I say that about bugs! It's a genius idea to turn the embroidery hoop into a magnifying glass - brilliant! xx
