How to use your stamps to create a still life.

Hello Everyone Debs here today to show how you can use your stamps to create a still life painting. I chose to do one of flowers, (of course) but any object stamp would work.

Getting your composition- plan what you want in your painting but keep it simple. You can see below that I chose to use the flowers from Fav Flowers which I stamped and cut round. Using it as a guide I drew my pot, and to add some depth I added a painting in the background.

Choosing your colours and Medium- keep you palette simple but use some contrast colours, (those opposite on a colour wheel) to give interest. I used watercolours as I love how you can play with the colour by adding or taking away water, but it’s your choice.

Balance- I actually drew my pot too big so added a few flower stems to give balance, otherwise it looked wrong. My pot is slightly left while the painting  is to the right. There is no wrong or right way, so play around to see what works for you.

Building it up- you can see above how I’ve used a neutral colour on the flowers and a light tone for leaves. It’s useful to build up your colour with translucent layers as this adds dimension to your objects. I used the white of the paper for a high light on the pot.

Shadow and light- I wanted my light to come from the top left, so the shadows were on the right. I first painted in my Core shadow which is the darkest area on my objects, then the cast shadow, shown best by the pot on the table. I repeated this where possible on the flowers. I added a stem to table again for balance. And finally I added white pen, here and then for that lovely sparkle.
